Puppy Preschool

puppy1a.jpgBay of Islands Veterinary Services Kerikeri clinic hold puppy classes on a regular basis. These are for pups from 10weeks – 4 months old and last about an hour one night a week for 4 weeks. They are taken by Rebecca Roper of the Bay of Islands Canine Association.

The classes help to socialise the puppy and get it used to other dogs, people and novel situations. Owners are shown how to start basic obedience training and taught about good pet care. They learn how to recognise early behaviour problems and how to prevent them. The pup gets used to coming to the vet clinic.

The importance of good socialisation and training for young dogs cannot be overemphasised. A recent survey showed that the commonest reason for death in dogs under one year old is euthanasia for behaviour problems. This is a frightening statistic which can easily be avoided by the correct approach to training and understanding your dog.
